YO LA TENGO
When Yo La Tengo plays you don't feel like you're at a concert. Instead it becomes an intimate portrait of how humans can communicate through music. Beauty, love, angst, disappointment, and fear about our world's future are all a part of their performance. Such was the case when the trio made up of Georgia Hubley, Ira Kaplan, and James McNew played Nagoya's Club Quattro the first day of December.
YO LA TENGO

The songs at the beginning of the set mostly came from their most recent album Summer Sun. Winter A-Go-Go has taken on a certain shagadelic sound. Season of the Shark is a standout. It's a melodic pop-rock song that proves that Matador is the only record label for a trio like Yo La Tengo. Georgia took over the vocals for Little Eyes an extremely vocal based song that seems to emphasize all the wrong lyrics, yet still works. Overall the songs off their latest album are themed to summer, but it's a dark version of summer that few musicians wish to explore.
Yo La Tengo is a fascinating because no song ever sounds the same twice. From recording to live performance the music has taken on a life of it's own to evolve and reach new levels. The difference between the recorded version of a song and the live version is often astounding.

This show at Club Quattro was a perfect example of Yo La Tengo's experimentation with their music. Many songs took on completely different forms from their recorded version.

YO LA TENGOYO LA TENGO
YO LA TENGOYO LA TENGO In it's current state the band has been together for over a decade and it's obvious that humor helps keep things fresh. They joked that they were sick of carrying around so much equipment on these international tours and were working on changing all of their songs to vocal only. Nothing But You And Me is their first attempt at using vocals only, well maybe there were a couple shakers and someone turned the drum machine on, but it wasn't a bad attempt. To enlighten the song even further Georgia and James did some choreographed dance moves while singing the background vocals.
