-- Right On White - Jack and Meg earn their Stripes --

White Stripes
A tepid drizzle outside Shibuya AX stood in stark contrast to the white-hot licks scorching the crowd indoors this evening, as garage-rock/blues revivalists, the White Stripes tore through an 80 minute set - the second night of their 4-date Japan tour.

White StripesA capacity crowd bobbed and quivered anxiously as they awaited Jack and Meg White to enter. An hour before, opening act, the Whirlwind Heat had taken the stage wearing only tighty-whitey briefs, dark socks and white tennis shoes. The gregarious trio belted through most of the tracks from their full-length album, 'Do Rabbits Wonder'. Twitching over a chugging, fuzzbox-laden bassline (no lead guitar) and propulsive drumming, mop-haired vocalist David Swanson alternated between writhing on the floor, spitting out indecipherable lyrics and twiddling the knobs on his Moog keyboard.

Most of the set was pure art-punk pretense (dissonant chords, the underwear, the fact that each track from 'Rabbits' is named after a color: Blue, Brown, Pink, etc), but just before their set ended, out came an actual, conventional song - (melody, bridge, chorus..everything!) which to these ears sounded like a Pavement b-side. After one last flailing episode (one that saw Swanson slip on a amp and hit the deck) the Heat hit their final note. Then, after covering their pasty chests with t-shirts, they started breaking down their equipment themselves.

White StripesThen came the aforementioned wait for Jack and Meg, which, upon reflection, wasn't so long. But thirty minutes was almost too much for the crowd, now packed elbow-to-elbow as far back as 5 meters (little more room near the back, thank god). Adding to the growing impatience was the music blaring from the speakers: Iggy and the Stooges. With each song, the crowd grew more and more restless, eventually erupting when the duo finally strode onto the stage as Iggy growled: "Now I Wanna Be Your Dog! Now I Wanna Be Your Dog!"
