EVANESCENCE @ Shibuya AX (28th JULY '03)
-- Make It a Double -- part2

Although Lee was clearly the star of the show, the other four members of Evanescence had little problem holding their own on stage. Dressed completely in black, the four men kept up their end of the show by turning out a solid, tight performance. Standing almost statuesque for the first half of the show, lead guitarist Ben Moody and the rest of the rhythm section loosened up and moved around while playing as the show progressed. The imposing shadows of their figures created by the fantastic light show that accompanied the concert added to the dark feeling of the music.

Judging from the reception each song received, the audience's favourite part of the night was the 1-2 punch of "Zero" and "Bring Me to Life". The Smashing Pumpkins cover went over well, with many on the floor of the venue pumping their fists and screaming along to the song. Possessing more of a straight ahead rock feel then most of the Evanescence's material it seemed to get the group really pumped up. This made for a great rendition of the band's next song, which coincidentally enough was their breakthrough single "Bring Me to Life". With John LeCompt providing strong back up vocals the group ripped their way through the track completely justifying all the hype that has surrounded them since its release.

Each song was met with a huge cheer and several screams of "I love you Amy" from various males and females. However, overall the audience seemed relatively tame by Japanese standards. With the energetic sounds of a mishmash of several hard styles including metal, alternative, goth, and electronica being played one would have thought the kids up front would have been going absolutely insane. Before entering the venue I already had visions of the sweaty masses banging into one another while several bodies and various limbs hovered overhead. However, people seemed content to simply nod their head or wave their arms along to the music.

Closing out the night with the dark etheral "Whisper" the group was quickly brought back out for a one song encore. With Evanescence only being able to spend a few days in Japan due to their busy schedule the flattered group promised to return again before leaving the stage. If their stock continues to rise as much as it has over the last six months it's probably safe to say that their next trip here will see them going for a lot more than a double.
