| Escaping the sweltering humidity of the oh-so-wonderful Tokyo summer, I entered Club Quattro mere seconds before Bloodthirsty Butchers walked out on stage. Clad in matching Hawaiian shirts, the quartet wasted little time, instantly launching into their first track of the night. Mixing punk, indie rock, and at times shoegaze, the quartet turned in an extremely tight set. The shoegaze feel of their music was reinforced by the behaviour of the band members themselves. Guitarist Hisako Tabuchi and bassist Takeshi Imoriya spent the duration of the performance staring down at their respective instruments, while guitarist and vocalist Hideki Yoshimura looked up only to deliver his vocals. Bathed in blue and yellow lights, the quartet effortlessly shifted between loud and quiet noises, while maintaining a hard, yet extremely melodic sound. The shadows created by the lighting and lack of audience interaction made it seem like the crowd was being allowed to watch the band practice. It was almost like the Butchers were jamming in some dark practice space, getting lost in their own music and pouring their hearts out for no one other then themselves. The idea of being permitted to watch a group of artists in this private state created a real intimate vibe and added to the overall greatness of the show.  |
  The practice ended just before the group's last song and the rock show began. With the stage fully lit up, Yoshimura belted out his lyrics while Tabuchi and Imoriya lifted their heads, allowing the audience to finally see their faces, to deliver strong backing vocals. Ripping their way through the song the Butchers opted for a big rock finish as they unleashed various rock poses and a few loud bouts of feedback. As bits of distortion screamed from the speakers the audience roared its approval as the band left the stage. Make sure you check out the Bloodthirsty Butchers at Fuji Fest on July 27th. Their fantastic musical abilities and showmanship will no doubt leave the rock hungry crowd gathered at the Red Marquee screaming for more. |
