| そして、その歌の数々に、ほぼ四半世紀前と同じように心を打たれ、抵抗することができないほどに感動する自分がいる。例えば、この日演奏された名曲『Your Bright baby Blus』。「ハイウェイの道沿いに腰を下ろして...」と始まるこの曲を聞きながら、イギリスではまだ珍しかったウォークマンでこの曲を聴きながら、ヒッチハイクをしていた頃の自分を思い出す。もちろん、おきまりのように演奏される、これまた名曲中の名曲『Running On Empty』も同じように、聞いたものだ。 |

「車輪の下を飛ぶように走り去る道路を見ながら、過ぎ去った日々を見つめていた...65年、僕は17歳。101を走っていた。そして、今、どこを走っているのかわからないまま、ただ走り続けている...」 と、始まるこの曲を何度聞いただろうか。 が、それは遙か彼方の昔。ここ数年はアルバムを取り出してこの曲を聴くこともほとんどなくなったように思える。 でも、この日、こういった曲を聴いて、ノスタルジーを感じることはなかった。過ぎ去った日々の過ぎ去った記憶が甦ってはきても、なによりも感じたのは、この歌と同じように今も走り続けている自分がいること。誰もが同じように、年輪を重ね、肉体的な衰えを感じ、どこかで着実に死に近づきつつあることを理解していても、まだなにかを求めて模索する日々がが続いていることを思っていた。 「昔からのヒット曲を延々と演奏しなければいけないってのは、つらいよ」 この日のライヴを見て、友人がそう語っていたけど、さて、そうなんだろうか。 |

それよりも逆に... この世には、どれほど時間が流れても、色褪せることなく、感動を呼ぶ歌があり、それを演奏できるアーティストがいる。ただそれだけのこと。そして、それこそが、「なぜ音楽なんだ」と言うことを語りかけてくれていたようにも思える。 ジャクソン・ブラウンの音楽には、ドラムンベースもなければ、トランスも遙か彼方のもの。トレンドや新しさとは全く無関係の世界にある。派手さもなければ、きらびやかなものもない。それを流行遅れと呼びたければ、それでいい。不格好と思えばそれでもいい。 それでも、心の奥底を揺るがせ、奮い立たせる興奮がある。その興奮は、どこかでレイジ・アゲンスト・ザ・マシーンやエイジアン・ダブ・ファウンデーションと似通っているとまで言ってしまえば、大げさだろうか。 「息子や演奏しろっていうんだ」 と、「Lives In Balance」が演奏されたときも、今回のアメリカやイギリスによるイラク国民への殺戮行為が彼の頭にあったのは明らかだし、それを察していたのがオーディエンスだったと思う。望むらくは、そんな言葉のひとつでも彼の口から出てくれば、どれほど力強い励みになったか... とは感じたのもの確かだが。 |

このジャクソン・ブラウンのライヴは後2日。3日は完全にソールド・アウトらしいけど、4日はまだ余裕があると聞いている。もし、まだ彼の歌を体験したことがないようだったら、ぜひとも足を運んでもらいたいと思う。流行廃りとは全く違った世界に宝石のような音楽があることを理解するには最適のアーティストだと思う。 また、もし、彼のアルバムを聴いてみようと思ったら... 正直言ってどのアルバムも傑作なんだけど、『The Pretender』や『Running On Empty』あるいは、『Lives in Balance』や『World In Motion』あたりを手にしてみればどうだろう。もちろん、最新作『The Nakid Ride Home』だっていい。今回のアメリカによる大量破壊行為を彼が警告しているのがわかるはずだ。 |
