当然ながら、左の写真が今日のライヴのものではないのはわかるだろう。これは今から20年前、初めて体験したジャクソン・ブラウンのライヴを撮影したもの。場所はイギリスのグラストンバリー・フェスティヴァルで、記憶は定かではないんだが、おそらく、1982年6月20日だったと思う。 当時、NATOがヨーロッパへの中距離核ミサイルの配備を決定したことに端を発して、全ヨーロッパで大きな盛り上がりを見せたのが反核運動。イギリスでその中心母体となったCND (核廃絶運動)へ収益を寄付することで、あの運動に大きな力を与えたのがこのフェスティヴァルであり、この年、ギャラを寄付すると申し出てここに出演したのがジャクソン・ブラウンだった。 すでに20年前も昔のことで、あの時彼が何を歌ったあのかほとんど記憶に残っていないのだが、名作『Late Fot The Sky』に収録されている"Before The Deluge"だけは思い出すことができる。「大洪水の前に...」と題されたこれが、ヨーロッパを襲っていた「核の恐怖」と重なって終末を予感させていたからだろう。 |
 そして、あがなうことができないような説得力を持つジャクソンの声も全く変わらない。大学生の頃に惚れ込んで初めて買った彼のアルバム『The Pretender』が発表されたのは76年。それから遡って入手したデビュー・アルバム『Saturate Before Using』は72年の作品と、すでに30年も前だというのに、当時と全く変わらない説得力を持って迫ってくる。そのあまりの変化のなさをどうとらえていいものか、どこかで自分がとまどうほどなのだ。  |
ファインダー越しにジャクソンの顔を見ていて、あの写真を撮影してから20年の年輪を感じてしまうのも仕方がないだろう。40年代終わりの1948年生まれらしいから、すでに50代半ば。顔に刻まれたシワを見ていると、70年代後半から『苦悩する青春のシンボル』のように歌われていたイメージからは遙か彼方に来たように思える。 が、同時に、なにも変わっていないようにも思えるのだ。同じような髪型に、同じようなシャツにジーンズ... およそ飾りっけなんて無縁のシンプルな出で立ちは、20年前どころか、子供の頃から変わっていないんじゃないだろうかと思わせる。
