Sonic Youth@Akasaka BLITZ (18th Feb '03) -- Part3 - SONIC YOUTH --
Of course, there it has to eventually as with anything and everything, but before that would happen this night, Sonic Youth duly gave us a rich bouquet of some of their best efforts new and old to date that garnered as Lee, Thurston, and Kim each traded lead vocal duties as longtime friend, colloborator and new Youth member Jim happily lost himself in his guitar and bass work as was the case for Shelley in his playful high hat laden drum execution.
Whether it was the straight female empowering uptempo maelstrom coaelesced in Kim's attitude in an improv-filled "Kool Thing" or Lee's earnestness searching amongst a collision of screeching guitars of ascent and descent in "Karen Revisited" or Thurston's reflective commentary in the quaint starting, but crescendo-filled riding road trip in "Empty Page," this was a communal effort that ran like any ocean water onto a diverse coastline to render different, yet beautiful awe-inspiring results. Their performance this night flowed ! smoothly over white sand beaches as well as crashed upon the rocks and cliffs, beautifully and needfully rising and falling, covering and uncovering, exploding over and then raining down below to our utmost satisfaction and their own's.

Yet like any artist in a live, the final trick of any gig is to end it all in a resonating fashion that is their own to covet and wear which Sonic Youth did not falter upon. With a hefty discography to choose from, they decided to make this final mark via their 'Dirty' album (DGC/ Universal) in the song "100%." While not sprawling in its construction as perhaps other SY classics, this song and its performance was spot on, as Thurston showed that he too can flex attitude as cooly as his wife Kim as a fuzz bass and searching guitar drenched it all while Shelley kept a steady high hat anchored beat as Thurston non chalantly added," All I know is you got my money,...but that's got nothing to do with a good time." Straight up compliance with those words and music of truth this night as well as for all of the following ones here in Japan and wherever else Lee, Kim, Thurston, Steve and Jim shall perform.
