"To find your treasure, you must find the end of the rainbow", says the bearded man in the Doves' sepia-toned opening film sequence. As Jimi Goodwin and the Williams twins take to the stage, we watch a masked young man searching for gold until the beat of The Last Broadcast's "Pounding" get the predominantly female crowd jumping squealing with delight.![]() Next came "There Goes the Fear", also from Broadcast. The bizarre film that accompanied it (a sweaty man seemingly chasing his fantasy girl to the beach) was not the last to strange an beautiful image to grace the screen. An acoustic version of Lost Souls' "Sea Song" saw a 4-way split of desert highways and fireworks while Broadcast's "New York" had Ellis Island footage. It became clear after the first few numbers that these visuals were not necessarily meant only for visual accompaniment for the music, but more for a distraction. The brothers Williams weren't struck with stage fright, per se, but with a projector pointed directly at them gave the audience something else to look at besides them. |
| It appeared to work, and the band seemed to slowly feel more comfortable on stage as the show went on. By the time they got to "Catch the Sun", it was obvious that the brother's live voices weren't the same as they were in the studio. Both were tuneful, but unable to sustain the notes. They had adjusted by changing the vocal arrangements while their sound guy added appropriate levels of aural filigree. Still, the live versions of "Words" and "Satellite" were stellar.

| As an encore, drummer Jimi Goodwin switched with Jez Williams to sing vocals on the first track on Lost Souls, "Here it Comes", complete with harmonica and a church organ. And the finale brought this Manchester trio back to their raver days as the acid-house band, Sub Sub. As clips from 2001 flashed across the screen, the three thrashed their instruments in a bass-heavy techno-trance called "Space Face". Then after sincere thanks to the enthusiastic crowd, they were off, to the consternation of the female fans. Oh well, they gotta fly free... |
