Heavily influenced by what was happeening in London at the time, Mondo Grosso was born. Acid Jazz was the thing, but the heart of Acid Jazz was more than anything but attitude to approach jazz and liberate jazz from a cage of purist to give freedome which should have been the hardcore of jazz itself. But Mondo Grosso was missing the point on the process of it and, I guess, that was the reason why the core members apart from the leader and a few left the band in the 90's. In that sense, what Sleep Walker does have is edgy, wild, funky, raged and maybe anarchic part of the early Mondo Grosso with musical progression. There is no vocals in the set, but each tune sings a lot and well and so does each musicial instrument. The conbination of hot Masayan's sax and cool Hajime's piano as well as cool bass of Tomokazu Sugimoto, and hot drums of Nobuaki Fujii, is perfect and well knitted into the over all music of Sleep Walker. |
