The Parkinsons @ Yuyake Matsuri
in Kiami, Hokkaido(24th Jan '03)-- Part1--
Just doing a couple of gigs in Tokyo, Osaka and possiblly Nagoya, most of the bands and artists having visited Japan say, "Yeh, we did a tour in Japan." What a laugh! Coming to a country with population of 120 million, if you are not capable to visit more than a few cities and doing a few gigs, I guess you are not anything but money maing machine with the best cost performance which seems to be nothing different from just a product of music industry.
But a few bands and artists, mostly far from "music industry, have got guts to do a long tour in Japan. I guess most of booking agents or management would never accept this idea of "never money making business", but a musician wants to play and lots of music fans far from big cities should be given a chance to face to them. I believe the Parkinsons is one of those few bands trying to do a real tour here in Japan.
Kicking off at Shinjuku Loft in Tokyo and played in Sendai and Hirosaki in northern end of Honshu, the Parkinsons were moving up to Kitami in Hokkaido, the most nothern island in Japan where I joined in them. Driving from Sapporo, the capital of Hokkaido, on a land completely covered by snow in blizzard, all of the boys were saying that they have never been to this cold land in their life.
What was waiting for them in snowstormed town, however, was real hot audience and local bands. |
Though the Parkinsons gave a big impact at Fuji Rock Festival '02, I imagine there were not more than hundred people from Hokkaido there as the cost of travelling to Naeba, where the festival was held, from Hokkaido is quite a lot and nobody could expect lots of audience at the venue called Yuyake Matsuri, "Sunset Fair", without any support of the local poeple. I found a few fans of the parkinsons in the audience, but it was obvious that the most of the poeple brought in by those support bands.
Despite of the heavy duty blizzard, there were about 80 people in the venue and a local punk out fit called TRICYCLE kicked off the show and HEADROCK followed. The amazing one was the one, called QUACK, came out just before the Parkinsons. Influenced by Kemuri, their straight ska-punk was good enought to warm us up and gave a great impact for all of us and the Parkinsons.
After the show, I got a CD-R copy of their works and should say they are damn good and if you get a chance to see them, you should never miss them. |
