What a view it really was! The top photo of the crowds were taken from a roof of a building surrounding the arena at Villaggio Globale in Rome where this gig was held. There were more than 10,000 people got here and some more were outside trying to get in... This is a gig of a relatively unknown bands in the English music media which appeared to rule the world, but it actually is not... ha?
Since I got addicted to music when I was, I guess, about 12 or so, I have listened to hell of a lot of albums and been to thousands of gigs and covered music of lots of countries for more than 20 years, but I have never experienced anything like this Banda Bassotti for quite a long time... Something similar was maybe the Levellers in the early 90's when they were at peak, but still the energy I felt from the audience of Bassotti was far more massive than those Brighton rebels.

I hear Banda Bassotti has never toured anywhere except Italy and Spain, but do hope that they will get a chance to spread their music all over the world as they are the real voice of working class people and their songs relate to those who have been suffering from political violence and oppression. The most common phrase I heard through the tour was , "Palestina Libre!", whose spelling might not right as I do not speak Italian, but I know what it means...
The day before the tour started, one of the original members of the Bassotti came back from Palestine where he was with Fermin Mugruza and some 300 Italian people for a direct action to stop the madness by Sharon regime. And I remember the tour started off with a minute silence on stage with no explanation, but all of us were aware that it was for those who have been killed by political and military violence... particularly in Palestine and Afganistan, I guess. |
