---- あなたがボブ・マーリーに初めて会ったのは14歳の時、ライブハウスの楽屋入口で待っていて、写真を撮らせてほしいと彼に聞いたのが始まりということですが。 「そうだね。まず、彼がイギリスをツアーするということを知り、ライブハウスの外で待っていたんだ。そこに、彼が現れ、ウェイラーズやピータートッシュもいたね。そして、ボブに“写真を撮らせほしい”と言い、彼が“ああ、いいよ”それだけさ。」 ---- そのとき自分の作品を見せたりしたんですか？ 「いや、見せてないよ。」 ---- え？ 「別におかしいことじゃないだろ？」 ---- え、でもお…。そのとき、カメラを持っていて、カメラを見せながら撮らせてほしい、って聞いたとか？ 「いや、カメラは持っていたけどそんなことはしなかったなあ。ただ、“写真撮っていい？”“ああ、いいよ”。それだけさ。」 ---- （びっくり）信じられない！ 「本当だよ。当時ボブ・マーリーはまだあまり知られていなかったしね。でも、その後有名になってからでも彼はいつでも謙虚な人だったよ。」 ---- 私もかつて、イギリスであるバンドをずっと撮っていたんです。私の場合は以前に撮ったライブ写真をマネージャーに見せて、次のライブを撮りたい、って聞いたら、マネージャーがゲストで入れてくれたのが始まりだったんです。でも、こういうことって、あまり起らない気がします。特に日本では…。 「うーん。でもそれは、バンドのタイプによるんじゃないかな？ あるバンドはボブ・マーリーのようにとても謙虚でいてくれるし、あるバンドは、そうだね、気取っていたり偉そうな態度とってみたり。ボブ・マーリーとは全く反対にね。」 ---- 彼はいつでも誰に対してもオープンだった、と 「そう。なぜなら彼は人々の中にいる人（People’s man）だったから。彼にとって大切なことはいかに人に対し優しくするか、ということだったからね。」 ---- なるほど。 |
