失礼な言い方なのは十分承知の上で、ギルバート・オサリヴァンがグラストンバリーに出演すると耳にしたとき、「ん？ まだ、現役でやっているんだ」と思ったものだ。なにせ、彼のヒット曲、「アローン・アゲイン」を初めて耳にしたのは70年代の初め。とんでもない昔なのだ。しかも、一発屋ではないが、もうひとつのヒット曲「クレア」を除けばほとんど記憶にはない。とはいっても、当時のアルバムを聞き直してみれば、思い出す曲ばかり。それだけでも、あの時代に彼が残したインパクトの大きさを認めざるを得ない。 とはいっても、不遇の時代だったといわれるのが80年代。復活したとされる90年代に発表されたアルバムを聴いたことはあるのだが、あまりぱっとしたモノではなかったように思う。なにせ、ほとんど記憶にはないのだ。 その一方で、日本での人気は根強く、幾度となくあのあたりのヒット曲がコマーシャルで使用されたり、日本のミュージシャンとのコラボレーションも多かった。ひょっとして、今も彼の曲がなにかで使われているように思うし、さて、今の彼はどんな感じなんだろう... と、覗いてみたというのが今回だった。 写真をご覧になっていただければ、確かに年齢を積み重ねたのはわかる。とはいっても、還暦を超えているようには見えない。しかも、その声が... 遙か昔に自分が耳にしていたそれと同じなのだ。それはまるでタイムマシンであの時代から帰ってきたようなもので、なにやら、ノスタルジックでほんわかしたな気分にさせてくれたのがこのライヴ。それこそが彼の魅力なんだと再確認できたように思える。 -->John Mayer comment and photos by hanasan |
