「エディ、あんたはもう引退してしまったのかい？ ん、いやぁ...」 ステージでそんな話を披露していたのが、当の本人、エディ・グラントだった。どうやら、「あの人は今」という感覚でグラストンバリーからのアプローチがあったようで、それを快諾して出演に至ったというような裏話が本人から伝えられていた。 すでに彼が活躍していた80年代から20年以上、なかなか彼の名前を知る人はいないのではないかと思うのだが、その時代を知っている人間にとっては、実に興味深い。本人を見ればわかるように、どうしてもレゲエのミュージシャンのようであるんだが、そうでもない... というのが微妙で、レゲエの影響を受けたポップスを歌っていた人というのが正しいのではないかと思う。実際、彼の出身地はジャマイカではなく、バルバドス。かつて、この島を訪ねたときに、彼が経営しているスタジオに行ってみたことがあるんだが、90年代終わり、彼がはまっていたのはソカだった。本人がソカを録音していたという話も耳にしたんだが、それよりもそういった音源を買いあさっているという噂を地元の人から聞いていた。 あれからもすでに10年ほど過ぎて、突然目の前で80年代半ばに見たことのあるアーティストの登場だ。その年月を感じさせないように、当時とほとんど変わらない表情でステージに立つ彼のバック・バンドの構成は典型的なレゲエ。が、彼が演奏したのは、やはりレゲエのようでレゲエではない彼のヒット曲オンパレードだ。こちらとしては、懐かしいという言葉しか思い当たらないんだが、ひさびさに公の前に登場したにもかかわらず、オーディエンスから出てきたホットな反応に本人もご満悦の様子だった。 -->John Mayer comment and photos by hanasan |
