エチオピアの音楽？ おそらく、ほとんどの人にとってこの国の名前を聞いて思い浮かべるのはマラソンに代表されるアスリートや陸上競技だろうし、音楽に関していえば、ほとんど未知の世界ではないかと思う。とはいっても、90年代にメジャーから、エチオピアのアレサ・フランクリンとも呼ばれているクイーン、アステル・アウェケのアルバム、『アステル・アウェケ』が紹介されたことがある。圧倒的な迫力を持つソウルフルな声で、どこかで日本の伝統的な音楽にも通じるメロディがユニークで愛聴していたのがそのアルバムだった。
加えて、ここ10年ほどエチオピアで圧倒的な人気を獲得しているのはGigi（ジジ）と呼ばれる女性で、ビル・ラズウェルとタッグを組んで発表したのが『GIGI』。どうやら、ビルと結婚してしまったという話も伝わっているのだが、真偽のほどは確認してはいない。いずれにせよ、アステルやジジに共通するのは独特のソウル。こういったスタイルが生まれてくる背景にエチオピアン・ソウルやジャズの歴史があることを伝えてくれるのがこのバンドじゃないかと思う。 とはいっても、このバンド自体を知っているわけではない。演奏は始まったときにはかなり凡庸なフュージョンっぽい音楽に聞こえたのだが、ヴォーカルが登場してくる頃から徐々に本性を出してきたということだろうか。残念ながら、ヴォーカリストの名前などは確認できなかったのだが、独特のきらめきを感じさせるエチオピアン・ソウルを十二分に楽しむことができた。また、驚かされるのはサックスだ。いわゆる西洋的なジャズの世界では聴いたことがないユニークなフレージングによるアドリブは奥の深いエチオピア音楽の魅力をまざまざと伝えてくれるのだ。 -->Holy Fuck comment and photos by hanasan |
