昨年、あまりの素晴らしさに感動し、「来年もゼッタイに行く」と決断し訪れたザ・グリーン・マン・フェスティヴァル。ところが、今年は昨年とは色んな意味で"違った"フェスとなっていた。

| まず、場内のレイアウト。 メイン・ステージとフォーキー・ドーキー・ステージ(テント)がかなり近い位置に設置され、「これでは互いの音が喧嘩しないだろうか？」と当初は心配だったのだが、ロック・フェスとは違っていたおかげで、思っていたほど気にならなかった。そして、昨年は小さめだったDJテントは今年はRumpus Room(娯楽室)と名付けられたサーカス・テントになっていた。 |

また、お馴染みのキッズ・エリアやリテラチャー・テント(文学の朗読や原作者のインタビューが行われる、なんとも英国的な場所)など他、、ヒーリング・エリアという所があり、ここはアロマ・マッサージの他、横たわる人の頭部でドラを鳴らすGong Bath(ドラ風呂？)なるものがあったり、ダウジング・ワークショップがあったり、と、なんとも興味深かった。 |
そして、観客が6000人からほぼ２倍の１万人に。私達は木曜夕方に現地入りし、その頃はキャンプサイトにテントが点在している程度だったのが、翌朝目覚めてみたらキャンプサイトにテントがびっちり！こりゃ去年より多いぞ！！と驚いていたら、「昨年もこのフェスに来ていたんだよ。君のことも覚えているよ」と私に声をかけてくれた英国人のおじさん達が、「今年は１万人お客さんが来ている」と教えてくれた。なるほど、そりゃテントもびっちりなわけだ。 それにしても、人が２倍に増えると、昨年はのんびりと観られたライブがぎゅうぎゅうに押されてしまったり、マナーの良くない人もいたり、等々昨年のゆったりした雰囲気がちょっと損ねられた感は拭えなかった。 
さらに、去年は大雨も降ったもののほぼ良い天気に恵まれたが、今年は晴れ、大雨、強風、しかも寒い！と、英国の１年分の気候をたった３日で堪能(？）出来るものであった。
特に大雨は主催者側にとっても予想外だったらしく、ウッドチップを撒いてもその量が少なかったためであろう、「ここならウッドチップがあるから安全！」と足を載せるとそこは泥の水溜り。そう、水溜りというか泥溜りにウッドチップが浮いているだけ、という罠のような目に遭ってしまった。 また、キャンプサイトまで一緒に戻った英国人の女の子に「さっき、裸足であるいたら、足の裏がソフトでいい感触だったわよ。あなたも試してみたら？ ふふふ。」などと罰ゲームのようなことを言われたり。 
なにせ１万人が泥を捏ねているだけに纏わりつき加減も半端でない。フェス会場とキャンプサイトを往復している間に身長が２センチくらい高くなったような気がした。そんなヒドイ目に遭いながら、ふと顔を上げて目に飛び込んでくるのは、精霊でも出てきそうなほど生い茂った木また木。そしてその背後に見えるウェールズの山々。それらを見ていると、「ま、いっか」と思ってまた重たい足を一所懸命動かしてみるのである。 天気のことはさておき、他にも昨年と違う点がいくつかあり、また、不便に感じることもあったのだが、トータルで評価するならば、やっぱり楽しい、他では得がたい感覚を吸収出来るフェスティヴァルなのだ。 それに、ザ・グリーン・マン・フェスティバルは今年で５回目。 まだまだ発展途上のフェスなのである。 来年は更にどの様に変貌するかをこの目で見届けるか、これより素晴らしいと思えるフェスを探しに更なる僻地を探訪するか。 私はこれからじっくり考えようと思う。 |
