折に触れて何度かノイゼッツのライヴを既に体験していたのだけれど、その時受けた衝撃度は変わらぬままに、今回のグラストでも彼らはダイナミックで野太い演奏を聴かせた。簡潔に評すれば、そのバンド・サウンドは、60年代後期の影響を思わせるサイケデリアとジャジィなアンサンブルがミックスされたストレートなロックン・ロールなのだけれど、やはりヴォーカリスト、シンギィの魂が燃えたぎった強力で実に美しい声が、このバンドを単なるポスト・パンク・バンドとして括るに終わらせない個性として、観る側を惹き付けているのだ。 実際、豪快過ぎて、ともすれば置いてけぼりを食らってしまいそうなそのステージングは圧巻以外の何物でも無い。くるくる回ったり、ギタリストの股下を潜ってみたり、とにかくシンギィの動きは一つ所に留まるということを知らない。スピーカーによじ上った次の瞬間には、座り込んでロング・トーンの間合いにこちらがどきりとするくらい強い眼差しを向ける。大きく見開かれていても、やるせなく閉ざされても、その瞳はそれを一度捉えたオーディエンスを掴んで離さないのに、エナジィ全開のプレイの中に再び戻ってはそんな事知らんとばかりに、思いのままに爆音に体をくねらせ、ドラム・セットに飛び乗り、叫び出す。野蛮で、大胆であり、それがとてつもなく格好良い。野生のエルザがジャングルで繰り広げる爆音ロック・パーティ、こんな例えじゃあまりに陳腐か知れんが、それでもそんなイメージが頭の中を駆け巡った。ジョン・ピール・ステージは青いテントで屋根が覆われているため、完全に屋内型とは言えないまでも天気の善し悪しに左右される率は比較的低いのだが、そのかわり開放感は野外のそれに比べて乏しく、それ故音全体がいまいち外に向かって突き抜けていかない歯痒さもあった。ノイゼッツの豪傑なエッジならば、アザーやピラミッドの方がより活きて響いたと思う。ブロック・パーティ、ザ・マッカビィーズを賞讃していた彼女達だが、鼓動が鳴り止まないスリリングなライヴ・パフォーマンスはもう彼らに追いつけ、追い越せの状態まで来ている。 |
