The Gossip
　前回彼女達のロンドン公演を観た時もそうだったのだが、このザ・ゴシップは開演時間きっかりには現われない主義なのか、だとすれば観客側からすると大っ変に迷惑な奴らであるが、グラスト最終日のジョン・ピール・テントのトリを飾る今回も、中々ベスのあの巨体が袖口から見えて来ない。焦らされる観客の口笛やら声援が飛び交う中で、ようやくプシューっとスプレーを頭に撒いて髪をドリフの如し爆発させながらベスがステージに登場した。青いドレスがパツンパツンに彼女のビッグ・ボディを覆The Gossipい、深く開いた胸元からは肌色ブラジャーがもろ見えである。裸足になってのっさのっさ体を揺らしながら、驚異の歌声が、テントを突き抜ける勢いで天井高く響き渡る。日本の中島君江だかいうオペラ歌手も、その巨体からとんでもない美声を出す人であったと記憶しているが、ベスのそれにはもっとパンクの凶暴性と力強さが漲っていると思う。

　何をどうしたのか、序盤におもむろに下着を脱いで尻も局部も晒した時には、この人のめちゃくちゃな展開についてゆけず、見たくないものを見てしまったようなとても複雑な心境になったことは否めず。肉々しい外見ばかりが先行してバンドの文字通りゴシップ的要素で騒がれる彼女だが、バンドの歌い手として持つ歌力の凄まじさ、ミニマル編成で時にベースかギターのみの隙間だらけなバンドの楽曲も、返ってメロディの強烈さを際立たせて聴き応えがある。パンク精神に乗っ取った人の意表を突く言動、観察力、本音を誤摩化さない毅然としたその佇まいは、音楽的にも、ミュージシャンとしても、注目に値する。

　同じ様に聴こえてしまう曲もあり、幅の面ではこれから期待したいところだが、とりあえず体はもうそれ以上成長しなくて良いであろう。ラスト・ソングでダイブした彼女は人波に埋もれて、沈み消えた瞬間は悪いけんど爆笑するより他なかった。ようやくセキュリティに持ち抱え上げられ這い上がった時にはほうほうの体であった彼女、ピースと言い残し完全燃焼といった様子で消えて行った。面白かったよ、ベス・ディットー。ハイプには埋もれることなく暑い夏を乗り切っておくれ。今年のグラストはこれで終わりでも、夏はこれからやって来るのだから。
