この後のパトリック・ウルフが目当てでフロントに陣取っていたものの、このバット・フォー・ラッシィズは思いがけない発見となった。シンガー、ナターシャの妖精の如し愛らしいルックスに、まるでおとぎ話から飛び出て来た様な出で立ちの彼女達は、森の弦楽隊とでも形容しようか、鈴の音や、弦楽器を主体としたまろやかで幻想的な世界観を静かに奏でる。チェンバロや、鼓笛隊を思わせるリズムの中で、心持ちハスキィ・ヴォイスがなぞるメロディにはケイト・ブッシュが持つドリーミィな神秘性と、パティ・スミスの詩的美意識が感じられ、呼吸を忘れてどんどんその不思議空間に引き込まれてゆく自分がいる。 一曲、一曲にさりげない解説を交え、はにかむその笑顔はとてもあどけないが、一旦演奏が始まると瞳に色がしっかりと宿り、正面を見据えて言葉を紡ぐその姿は数いる女性シンガー・ソングライターの中でも一際強い個性として印象に焼き付いた。牧歌的なフレーズや、朗読調の柔らかい声の響きもちょっとすると儚げなのだけれど、芯が太いのか、決して脆弱な雰囲気では無い。力量で聴かせる歌唱力ではなく、彼女の持つ少女の様な佇まいから沸き起こって来るごくごく正直な感情がその歌心に現われているのが伝わってくるのだ。 音楽を表現する上で、どのように自分を見せるか、芸術を愛する者ならば幾多の方法に頭を巡らすことだろう。ステージに立つ、自分とは異世界にいる人であるとはいえ、大抵の人は、特にグラストの様な、音楽だけに留まらない複合的なお祭りに足を運ぶ人達ならば、より身近に感じられる親しみ易いミュージシャンの演奏の方が皆で盛り上がれて楽しいと思うのが自然だと思う。当然ステージにも規模の大小があり、出演者もそれを踏まえた顔ぶれになっている。けれども、時に生まれるこうした予期せぬ出会いがまた、幸せな夜を彩ってくれることもあるのだ。今夜この場所で自身の世界を凛と披露したバット・フォー・ラッシィズを観た事が、きっと別の誰かの胸にも忘れ得ぬ深い刻みを記しただろう。
