少々鼻息が荒くなってきたので、ここらで一つ深呼吸してみたい。ルーファス・ウェインライトは今までTVでのパフォーマンスを目にしただけで、ライヴは今回初めてである。その時は、上手い人だな、聴かせるな、と思ったものの、別段強い印象は残らなかった。服装も、いたってシンプルなスーツ姿だった様な気がする。 まあ、晴れの舞台であろうから各自気合いの入った衣装を揃えたい気持ちは分からんでも無いが、彼が登場した時は、漫画じゃないが目ん玉が飛び出てしまった。上下赤白のストライプスのスーツ、その中に更に白黒ストライプスのシャツを重ね、上着にはキンキラキンに光輝くバッチが。星やら、花やら、もうゴテゴテなのである。彼が従えるバック・バンドの人達もそれに倣った衣装で、至る所からブローチのラメに反射するキラキラした光が眩しいことしきり。美川憲一にも、アンタ、ちょっとそれやり過ぎよ、とダメ出しをくらいそうなド派手さで、本人も登場してからそう気づいたのか、ちょっと着飾り過ぎたね、と照れ笑いして観客の笑いを誘っていた。まあ、そこはグラスト。ビョークにしろ、通常の参加者にしろ、ドレス・センスは問われぬ自由な雰囲気である。 生で聴くと信じられないほど伸びやかで張りのあるルーファスの歌声には品があり、深く胸に染み渡ってゆく。洗練されたリズム、優雅なメロディに乗った彼の歌は、音楽一家で育った彼の先天的、及び後天的なセンスに裏打ちされ実に耳に心地良く、上質で丁寧な音作りが伝わってくる。ボロを着ていても、生来の育ちの良さは分かる、とか何とか小説なんかに描写がありそうだが、彼の場合、一見アメリカ横断ウルトラクイズみたいな出で立ちでも、それが遊び心として済むユーモアと受け止められるし、そういう所で気取らない姿が、逆に音楽の才能をより際立たせている感すらある。実姉のマーサ・ウエインライトとのデュエットで観客を沸かせ、締めにシカゴばりのミュージカルをパロディ化し女装したルーファスは、真っ赤なルージュに黒タイツ姿で脚線美を惜しげも無く披露。空模様も彼も、実に天晴れであった。 |
