Welcome to a Wonderland of Alternative Culture
It was about a quarter of a century ago of 1982 when I first visited the Glastonbury Festival in Somerset. I remember there was no fence as such surounding the site and none of, what we call, the security guards was found there. It just appeared like a peaceful and laid back festival never known to the mass of people and surely, at least, noboy in Japan knew anthing about this as there was no Japanese people found there. It now is impossible to know how many Japanese are there in the festival as it is too massive, but at the time, it was not that big at all and certainly there were not may people there. At the top of the Pyramid, there was a giant CND (Campaign For Nuclear Disarmament) sign, which we call "Pease Sign" in Japan, shining and symbolizing the vibes of the festival. It was telling us why we were there and one of the reasons was that fact that all of the proceeds were donated to this organization to stop the NATO disposing mid reage nuclear misiles at the time. Pretty a lot of the people working and helping at the festival were members or supporters of CND and the most of the audience seemed fully understood the link of the festival and CND. Comparing with the situation now, it was rather small and quite, but I clearly remember the positive energy and vibes covering the fild of the festival. A couple of years later, I first visited there as a journalist and did an interview with Michael Eavis, the owner of the farm and the organizer of the festival. The words of him describing the idea behind the festival were true to what it was. "It is like a romatic apporach to Utopia where people can get together once a year... I juust wanted to make it real... That is what Bob Dylan and some musicians are singing about..." I guess a big change to the festival came around the early 90s after the walls in Berlin broke down and the relief of international tensions inbetween the west and east seemed to be a real thing for a short while, Instead of CND, the Glastonbury started donating the proceeds to Green Peace, Water Aid and Oxfam. [研究社新和英中辞典第４版] CNDへ最大の寄付を繰り返していた、通称、グラストが変化し始めたのは90年代頭だったろうか。ベルリンの壁が崩壊し、東西の緊張が緩和され始めた頃、CNDに代わって、寄付する対象がグリーンピース、ウォーター・エイド、オックスファムへと変化。急速にフェスティヴァルが肥大化し、集まってくる人も増えていった。14歳以下の子供は無料で、フェンスもたいしたものではなかった当時、数多くの人たちがただで会場に忍び込んでいたという話は有名だ。おかげで、地方政府から開催許可を得るのに大きな問題が浮上し、開催が危ぶまれるどころか、マイケル・イーヴィスが訴えられるといった事態にも直面したこともある。　そんな流れのなかでさまざまな事件も増えていった。開催期間中に会場で二人の赤ちゃんが生まれたという逸話もあれば、ショットガンを持った強盗に襲われた店を助けるために、急遽、ビリー・ブラッグが会場内チャリティをしたり...　いずれにせよ、あまりの肥大化が「都市がそのまま田舎に流れ込む」という状況を作り出したんだろう。そんな事態を受けて、いつの頃からか会場内に警察が入るようになり、運営の一部に大きなプロモーターが関わってくるようになっていった。巨大な壁が会場を包み込むようになったのは、その頃からではなかっただろうか。　80年代には、わずか200エーカーほどだった敷地も、現在は1000エーカーになったと聞く。84年に取材した時点で会場の敷地面積が、当時の後楽園球場40個分ほどだったことを考えると、その巨大さが想像できようというものだ。ヒッピー・フェスティヴァルから、ロック・フェスティヴァル、そして、ロックも音楽も遙かに越えて、まるで不思議の国のようにも見えるのが21世紀のグラストだ。といっても、すでに巨大なビジネスになってしまったかのような様相を見せる一方で、会場のどこにも企業の宣伝は見あたらないし、企業看板だらけの日本の「フェスティヴァル」とは明らかに一線を画している。加えて、まるでフェスティヴァルがオルタナティヴな街になったかのようなもので、ここに集まってくる人たちの年齢層も国籍も多様を極めている。フェスティヴァルがまるで「若者の」もののように思われている日本とは全く違った光景がここで繰り広げられていると言っていいだろう。　今年はマグの写真家、ライターなど11名がこのオルタナティヴな「不思議の国」を体験している。彼らの目にグラストがどう映ったのか？　マグでは、彼らが独自に取材したライヴのレポートの他に、彼らにとってグラスト体験とはなにだったのか...　そのあたりにスポットを当てて、まとめていこうと思っている。 comment and photo by hanasan
