ジ・オートマティック。今回のグラスト・レポートを書くにあたって、自分が以前マグに寄稿した彼らのアルバム・レヴュー、及びロンドン公演レポートを読み返してみたのだが、なんだかいやに興奮した様子である。確かに、思い返せば去年の今頃は彼らのモンスターがひっきりなしにラジオでかかり、インディ・ツアーなどでもその面白ライヴ模様が各方面で絶賛されていた。書いてある記事にその時の自分が感じた思いを綴ってあることも嘘ではない。だがしかし、一年経ってあれから彼らの新曲をろく に耳にもしない状態になり、新しいバンドは次々出て来るし、はっきり言ってもう彼らの事を考える日々はなくなっていた。約1年ぶりのライヴだが、突風吹き荒れ、大雨が斜め降りしている悲惨なこの状況からも、何か嫌な予感がする。観客の歓声の中、未だ初々しい兄ちゃんといった4人がステージに立ちさっそく演奏が始まる。ヴォーカル、ロブのどっこい然とした太い歌声や、キーボーディスト、ペニィの手前勝手なコーラスなど、目の前に広がる光景はちょっと前に観たものと変わらない。ペニィはいかに変わって見せるかを研究してきましたといわんばかりに、回転しつつのキーボード演奏、曲芸並みにマイク・コードを操り、だまっちゃいられない式パフォーマンスを繰り広げ、こういう野外のイヴェントではさほど彼らを知らない人でも楽しめるであろうエンターテインメント性で一生懸命盛り上がろうと頑張っていたようだ。だがしかし、頑張っているようにしか伝わって来ない時点で、面白くも何とも無い。特に意味も無い歌  詞が綴られただけで繰り返されるフレーズも、旬が過ぎてしまった今となっては、昨年の今頃沸き起こっていた人々の熱狂を取り戻す事ができないほど、賞味期限切れのサウンドとして虚しく響き渡るだけだった。一つの大きなピークは確実に迎えた彼らだ。演奏力も度胸もある。見栄えだって悪くない。日本で言うならば、中学生や高校生がカラオケの対象として支持する様な親しみやすさはこちらのキッズ達にとっても同じであろう。ただ大人はどうだろう、少なくとも筆者はお祭り騒ぎ特有の雰囲気だけではノレなかった。寧ろ、そういう音楽が苦手である。時に食べ物屋巡りをしていた方が有意義に過ごせたかもしれない。 |
