"Ozomatli, Ozomatli, Ozomatli...." Ozomatli - 2005 Tour: Osaka, March 16, and Tokyo, March 17
"Ozomatli, Ozomatli, Ozomatli...." is the chant that usually pervades a live performance by the high-voltage 10-member group of the same name. Electrifying doesn't even come close to describing the amount of energy that flows both from band to audience and back again. To witness them live is to become a believer.
Japanese audiences have already had several chances to be converted. Ozomatli have played at the Fuji Rock Festival twice (most recently last year) and also toured Japan in their own right three years ago. Their forthcoming tour (March 16, Osaka, and March 17, Tokyo) will be their second. If you have yet to discover the Ozomatli experience, then get ready to dance.

Ozomatli has ten members - Wil-Dog Abers: bass, background vocals; Raul Pechecho: guitar, tres, jarana, lead vocals; Justin "El Nino" Poree: percussion, rap vocals; Asdru Sierra: trumpet, lead vocals, piano, acoustic guitar; Ulises Bela: saxaphone, background vocals, requinto jarocho, keyboard, melodica; Jiro Yamaguchi: tabla, percussion, background vocals; Mario Calire: drums; Sheffer Bruton: Trombone; DJ Spinobi: turntables; and Jabu: rap vocals.
In the course of their 10 years together, they have released 3 albums -Ozomatli (1998), Embrace The Chaos (2001) and, most recently, Street Signs(2004).
Though there have been some member changes along the way, the most significant of these has been the addition of both a full-time DJ and a full-time rapper. The original line-up featured Cut Chemist and Chali 2na, respectively, in these positions, both of whom are arguably more famous in their own right on the L.A. music scene than as members of Ozo. Chali 2na in particular is more famous as a member of Jurassic 5.
For Embrace The Chaos, DJ Spinobi and rap vocalist Kanetic Energy were brought on board, both for the recording of the album and the live tour. So, if you saw them three years ago, then you would have seen the first full-time line-up of band members. And by the time Street Signs was in the making and also in time for their appearance at last year's Fuji Rock Festival, rap vocalist Jabu replaced Kinetic. On that occasion, Jabu donned a Superman T-shirt and did indeed deliver a powerful performance.
Cut Chemist and Chali 2na never toured with the band in this country. But now with permanent members Spinobi and Jabu, Japanese audiences will be able to enjoy the full effect of the full line-up - just as they did at Fuji Rock last year...
