"You lot! What? Don't stop! Give it all you got!" And how fittingly this Clash classic runs seamlessly true in Beck Hansen's 7th studio affair. It's been nearly 2 decades since his European busking into "Loser" beginnings, but Beck Hansen again shows he knows what to do in the ebb and flow of his discography.
Making it to lucky no. 7, Beck and company run happily amok throughout this breezy 18 port-of-call affair. The sliding entry into wide-open seas is apparent in the rumbling, free-flow opener "Elevator Music." With strong winds pushing steady, the bass-buttoner, string-peppered "Think I'm in love" refreshingly repeats as the deep ocean sunshine can be felt.
As twilight hits and anchor is landed, the funktified "Cellphone's Dead" makes a great partner to Captain Morgan and your smokes of choice as it jerks and pumps about while dawn stretches in the piano-drenched "Strange apparition." The meandering, shimmering layered "Soldier Jane" keeps you steady after the ghost in you experience, but follower "Nausea" snaps you awake as the ocean calm is broken into gathering swells. A brief haunting break in weather is felt in the intimately hypnotic "New Round."
"Dark Star" keeps the 2nd night's journey on course as the waves bounce you like the bass hemmed in this while "We Dance Alone" gives you company topside as smiles are assuredly shared in this smooth shuffler. But we all know a full belly is the happiest one and thankfully "No Complaints" gives the feed you need in its pulsing, growing jaunt.
Surprises abound in the frantic port of call "1000 BPM" as it feels Herbie Hancock circa '82 governed this one. With anchor up and momentum, "Motorcade" gives its endless droplets of fuel to your sails into the main port of call, "The Information," where you can instantly feel all the interesting characters welcoming you in their exotic, magnificent land.
More to be said, but as they say, "What happens here, stays here." Bon voyage.
