Well, 2 decades past this classic exemplification of the beauty found in consistencies within properly calibrated repetitions of forces intertwined continues in 'Eight Rare Cases.' The psychedelic-tinged tapestries from Tokyo-based quintet henrytennis adds yet another flavor to the forever compiling internationally-fed Viking bar in music to sample. Coalescing a 9-course feast, Yoshihito Okumura (guitar, voice, synthesizer), Shou Matsuzawa (synthesizer, Glockenspiel, sampler, Tape Echo), Reizaburou Adachi (drum & sax), Yoshinari Kishida (drums) Mami Matsuzaka (keyboards, voice) and Hidekuni Fukazawa (bass) serve up continuous volleys of savory, layered synchronizations that strike familiar, yet new for tables near and far. Opener "The electronic flute" is not an ode to fairy tales, but with its swirling hypnotic start into its racing, building skip, fittingly commences this feed. No break in hospitality is felt in "Natural law" or Darwinism to speak of here, just a reverberating stop-start strength bathed in its shared vocals. "Luster Brain" rumbles and builds in its tribal callings as "Disappointed Eggs" dreamily meanders into the pitter-pattering panache of "Neon Lights." Timed impeccably, refilling, elevating refreshments abound in "Hydration" to the happy hammock haze of "Bakuretsu Ginga." "Landmachine" resonates in Mami's yearnings awash walking reverberations. Just as when you shut your car door after a revealing road trip and reenter your home, "Aftermath" smoothly closes this bounty into your bed. reviewed by michael |
