That Resonates Within And Without
"Just don't let me fuck up will you? Cuz' when I need a friend it's still you," the raw and honest callings of classic Dinosaur Jr. perfectly encapsulates the disarming directness and brotherhood followed by one of it's biggest followers unknown to most, Ireland's Snow Patrol. Following 2004's The Final Straw, Patrol's aptly titled Eyes Open wholly embraces the undeniably real and committed demeanor of this quintet. Led by the ever-beaming Gary Lightbody (vocals, guitar) alongside his own four horsemen of Jonny Quinn (drums), Nathan Connolly (guitar, vocals), Tom Simpson (keys) and new recruit Paul Wilson (bass, vocals), Eyes dutifully unfurls directly.
Again awash in Lightbody's disarming deep convictions, this Patrol treks it deeper in taking it to 11, 11 awakening tracks upon the rich possibilities ahead, more importantly those present which require a courageous confrontation. The racing, pulsing, charger "You're All I Have" commences this trek, in its radiant optimism echoed in Paul and Nathan's dual choral harmonies, Jonny's omnipresent high-hat and Tom's ascending ivory liberations. "Hands Open" chugs, marching away while "Chasing Cars" beautiful builds in its tick-tock inquisitiveness into one final swathing resonant crescendo for a quiet close of emboldening. The taut, pounding, digging start of "Beginning To Get To Me" unfurls wondrously into multiple layers in an overdue acknowledgement of the needless reality, awakening one into the necessary stance of courage. Bathing warmly in Tom's cascading keys that give you restful raindrops on your head amidst Gary's reassurances in your path taken, the reflective lullaby "You Could Be Happy" selflessly instructs perfectly, "Don't think. Just do." The repeating 3-octave jangler "Open Your Eyes" builds in its compelling conviction to share and stand vigilant in your relations into the closing sparse, quiet, early morning beauty of "The Finish Line" with this sort of homecoming in resolve that harkens back to their Irish brethren in their greatest time of question. With our eyes open, on the borderland beyond we run with these brothers in arms. Indeed.
