If you ever needed some sunshine inside your head and upon your shoulders, look no further than this 38-minute joyride that swings, strolls and stirs. At the helm is the ever-charismatic Steve Rinaldi (vocals, keyboards, trombone, French horn) for his RINALDI SINGS incarnation. With impeccable assistance from Chris Borsberry (guitar), Tim Charlton (bass), Trevor Smith (drums), Andy Brush (saxophone), Tim Pannell (trumpet), Rowan Fenner (backing vocals) and Richard Hunter (percussion), not to mention an extended orchestra, 'What's It All About?' is easily the newest, freshest staple soundtrack of faith, hope and effervescent fun that effortlessly throws you swiftly back into the heyday world of cocktails and fitted suits while at the same time propelling you divinely forward, toward the imagined boundless futures of yours.
Bursting out of the gates with horns blaring in sheer liberation, "Happy" begins this Rowan & Martin's-era "Laugh-In" spun project, making you swear a young Goldie Hawn was happily dancing away to it all, as bubbles continuously float overhead from the sweet intoxication served. Into the strings-fed, trumpet/trombone-laden, soft touch disarming beauty of "Magic Carpet Ride," your hands simply cannot stop from coming together. With its usage of keys and the smooth walking vocal deliveries of Rindaldi himself, vintage Paul Weller comes through in "Rollercoaster Ride". "A Matter Of Life And Death" brings in Herb Alpert leanings that just adds to the glorious adventures found in totality for 'What's It All About It?" Aplenty.
Sure, with numerous titles duplicative to hallmark ones such as "Come Fly With Me" with their obvious seasonings from esteemed colleagues of yesteryear, you'd think this project would sputter and stall on any and all comparisons, yet that IS the last thing that occurs as Rinaldi mixes it smartly. Heaven knows in taking a chance on listening to this, you'll leave loneliness far behind. Like anything good, this resoundingly reminds you that you're alive.
