With disasters both natural and not unfurling worldwide seemingly more and more, one just wonders how to find some peace and solace in such tumultuous times that have left more questions than answers. Stepping in once again to satisfy this hunger and beyond is Boulder, Colorado's String Cheese Incident. After tireless touring, multiple live albums and 4 previous studio albums, SCI have found themselves wonderfully at ease in their kitchen of sorts as their cohesiveness simmers beautifully in their latest stew, the aptly titled 'One Step Closer." that has this finger-lickin' good 5-piece almost there in delving out their culinary masterpiece for all to fill their bellies and brains, ensuring that unlike the title of their debut album, they were born on the right planet.
'One Step Closer' effortlessly sprawls happily as a quintessential example of sheer comfort food as if you're a traveler far from home. Not a mystery achievement for SCI's steady accumulation of their immensely diverse shared talents dispensed between Kyle Hollingsworth (keyboards, accordion, vocals), Michael Kang (guitar, mandolin, mandola, violin, viola, bass, vocals), Keith Moseley (bass, acoustic & electric guitars, harmonica, vocals), Billy Nershi (acoustic & electric guitar, lap steel guitar, dobro, vocals) and Michael Travis (drums, bass, acoustic guitar, vocals). Opening with the disarming "Give Me The Love" to the dreamy echoed assurance of "Sometimes A River," SCI give you a savory sampling from their kitchen afire in ingredients and aromas to keep that smile wide on your face. The honest, walking reflection of "The Big Compromise" gives strength in showing none while the title track sheens in its narrative determination that bleeds resilience. The carefree harmonica-fed bluesy "Brand New Start" finale leaves you in a happy gaze and haze from this robust cutlery-free meal. Repeat servings recommended.
