Although billed as an appetizer, the self-titled debut EP from The Nein could easily pass for a full course meal at the finest of restaurants. Filled with a hefty serving of angular goodness, the American trio unleash half a dozen explosive tracks that would satisfy the palette of any discerning music lover.

The first tasty morsel served up is "Five Extinctions". The song builds as Finn Cohen defiantly howls "We're in the know/ Won't speak when we're spoken to." Cohen's cry is followed by an awesome burst of raw, ragged guitars and a blistering beat that will have you shaking your ass to the glorious rhythms and pumping your fist as your frustration with the world grows in sync with his.

The group's energetic, pulsating rock sounds would have some place them in the same category as last year's post-punk saviours Franz Ferdinand. However, as the band so eloquently state in their bio, they play music for grown-ups that deals with adult issues. So while the Scottish lads sang tales of lament about girls who wouldn't go out with them, The Nein differentiate themselves by dealing with more serious problems on tracks such as "War is on the Stereo". Catchy and compelling, the anti-Bush administration anthem's chants of protest will continue to echo through your mind long after the record has ended.

Filled with heavy layers of dark, dense instrumentation and dynamic noises, this is an album that not only warrants repeated listens, but flat out demands them. Fans will be continually challenged as they delve deeper into the disc's sonic treasures.

After five potent blasts of guitar driven fury, the group ends things with the electronic "Clearwater". Cohen's effect-laden vocals rise above a sea of swirling, synth dominated loops that serve as a cool refreshment to wash down this gratifying musical experience. A solid effort from start to finish, anyone who can listen to this EP and not be ecstatic about The Nein's upcoming full-length recording either needs to clean their ears or is a damn fool. It's as simple as that.
