This album rocks. And wails. And waxes. And almost soothes one's soul at the loss of one of the greatest rock artists of all time. Joe Strummer's passing hit us all hard. This, his last album with the Mescaleros, has a double edge. On the one hand, it is the band's best album yet and therefore a fitting tribute to the sum of Joe's years as a musician. On the other hand, it is SO good that it leaves me wanting more and wishing that Joe could have stuck around a little longer and been able to deliver more of his heartfelt and unpretentious blend of rock and rhythms.

I heard the band perform a few tracks off Streetcore during what turned out to be their last tour in Japan in the summer of 2002. I caught their shows at both Asagiri Jam and Liquid Room. And both times they delivered such a high-voltage version of Get Down Moses that I was already wanting and waiting for the album. And though Joe's passing was a great disappointment, the album, when it eventually emerged, was anything but.

Streetcore includes a cover of Bob Marley's classic "Redemption Song" - a minimal acoustic rendition (in a lower key than the original, which makes it great to sing along to) and complete with the hard edge of Joe's Cockney-fied English accent. Other mellower songs include the country and Western-esque track "Long Shadow," which was written in memory of Johnny Cash, who passed away a year or so before Joe. And another "Silver And Gold" is, in fact, a cover of a country and Western song. The lyrics describe what one man might want to do before he grows old and dies. It sends shivers.

In addition to "Get Down Moses," other truly rockin' songs are "Arms Aloft," which kicks some serious butt after a winding intro, and - my all-time favorite - "All In A Day," which is destined to become a rock classic.

The words to all the songs are deep - just as deep as Joe was when it came to politics and life's ongoing struggle. The Japanese edition 2003 also features 4 live bonus tracks: The Harder They Come (Jimmy Cliff), A Message To You Rudy (Specials), Yalla Yalla (off the Mescaleros "Rock and the X-Ray Style" album) and Blitzkrieg Bop (Ramones).

Don't just buy this album because Joe is gone - buy it because it's one of his best.
