Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival @ Empire Polo Fields, Indio, CA (25th to 27th Apr. '08)
Prince Reigns In The Desert
Prince Reigns In The Desert - The desert festival becomes Prince Castle. With ticket sales well below normal within 3 weeks of the 2008 Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival, the USA top festival of alternative music, Prince joined the bill in the most high profile slot. Saturday nights final main stage show, at the end of a day that included an important reunion show by Portishead and hot sets by electro-funk masters Hot Chip and rock show champions Les Savy Fav.
The question was weather or not Prince would, rise above or simply blend, with the true modern alternative rock scene on display here in Indio California. Located 1.5 hours east of Los Angeles this desert oasis is an ideal setting for a concert festival. No need for mud boots or rain coats just lush green grass on the entire location and sunny weather that feels good on the skin & to the soul. About the only thing you don't want to forget is a bottle sunscreen, your shades, and an open ear for great music.
The show features all of the cutting edge new talent that you would expect from a world class music festival. Prince showcased his headline status by bringing the funk. With shredding guitar solos & excellent vocal range Prince said&'I’m so funky, I cant even sleep with myself& and after a very cool &Raspberry Beret& he declared &You are in the coolest place on Earth right now&. He was not lying. Morris Day & the Time had the leg-shaking good-time dance going and after Prince played his guitar funk for nearly 2 hours there was not a person in site who thought Prince was an odd fit to the fest.
In truth, the Coachella Experience exists on its own as a special place on this planet where the old & new, the good & better, the wonderful & phenomenal all get together in the name of quality. There are great works of art all over the festival grounds from sculptors & artists known throughout the world. The list of bands playing is as different and various as you could dream a Music & Arts festival would be. Roger Waters from Pink Floyd, the Raconteurs featuring Jack White, and another Jack, Friday headliner Jack Johnson brought positive vibes & even more rock guitar licks and melodies. The Cool Kids showed how fun hip-hop could be with a desert beach party complete with beach balls & water pistols. Meanwhile the Breeders and Stephan Malkmus from Pavement brought the 90's revolution to the '08 new music fans. And for those who were there for the future of rock, the National, Mark Ronson, the Black Kids, and Does It Offend You, Yeah showed they are more than ready to shine in '08.
Of all the possible destinations for the music rock festival I can think of nowhere better than this paradise in the California desert. For the cost of a plane ticket, train to the show, and camping pass, I was able to see over 100 of the worlds top musical acts and experience one of the best festivals the planet has to offer. With a constant line-up of the most exciting acts in alternative rock and the beauty & comfort of this desert & grass oasis, I am sure this is not a Once-in-a-Lifetime experience.
